The Long-tailed Weasel may be found across southern Canada. The Short-tail or Ermine Weasel may be found further north up to the Artic and in New Found Land. They are red or brown with a white belly and have a black tip on the tail. They turn white in the northern winter climates. The weasels we see locally do not change colour in winter. They were, and are trapped for their fur. They are ferocious hunters and good controllers of the

mouse and rat population. Once a weasel gets sent of prey it will track it right to its den. They have a very distinctive oder which can be very un-pleasent and is stronger in the summer. The weasel is not like by Chicken Ranchers as they can destroy a considerable amount if they get in. They are not social animals and Male and Female live apart except for breeding which happens in the fall with the young being born in the spring.
