The Eastern Chipmunk is the tiniest member of the squirrel family and lives on and under the ground .They have five dark stripes down the back, and two stripes on each side. They hibernate in winter as well as store caches of food. They are some what people shy; yet will take handouts; as in peanuts. I observed

a rather gregarious chipmunk carry away a whole bag of un-shelled peanuts, two at a time; one stuffed in each cheek. He actually entered the bag as he emptied it. He fought off all intruders whom would dare try to share his wonderful treasure. Native Legend suggests the stripes on the Chipmunk are a result of an long ago encounter with an angry bear.
