They nest in marshy areas, and when its nesting area is invaded by people or predators, they screech loudly. It is our only black-bodied tern, and in it's breeding plumage, it has a black head and underparts, with the wings, back and tail dark grey. They fly with an erratic night-hawk-like flight. They feed mostly on insects and occasionally small fish.    |
