These are the only members of the Family Picidae. that has a white back. This is a Male Downy. They are found across Canada. They live on tree-boring insects, berries, acorns, sap, and some seeds. All Woodpeckers have a chisel-bill, strong four toed feet and long tongues. They may be found in forests, and shade trees. The male is adorned with a bright red patch on the back of the head. It can be seen quite clearly in the next image. These birds are friendly and quite curious.
