People often confuse the Tree Swallow and Purple Martin because from a distance they look similar. Its is only when you get a closer look that their size and colour stands out. The Tree Swallow is a familiar site around the Pearce House, darting back and forth. It is Blue-Green with a white breast and belly. The young may be confused with the Bank Swallow. They like open country close to water, marshes, meadows and streams. It is smaller than the Purple Martin and the male does not have the blue-green belly. Both lack a true swallow-tail.
