The Bellin 1744
Charlevois Bellin Map of 1744

This map shows the Villages of Teiaiagon, Gandat Siagon and Ganaraske. This is interesting because the Marquis De Nonville supposedly destroyed them and certainly the Mississauga had driven out the Seneca from the area by then. Are these the remains of these villages? We know today Ganaraske is Port Hope, and the remains of Teiaigon are marked with a Commemorative Plaque ( near Jane and Baby Point Roads beside the Humber River ) but what about Ganatsekwyagon?

Many maps exist showing Ganatsekwyagon, spelling it in different ways. The Dolier Galinee Map of 1670, the Jolliet Maps of 1673, 1674 and the Charlevois Bellin Map of 1744. The problem with all the maps is they show a name with no mention of exact location or distance. A small section of the Dolier Galinee 1670 Map is shown in the left panel. The map maker leaves notes for his partner, but no location. Ganatsekwyagon on this map is spelled as ( Ganatsekiagan ) but the river is not shown. The map is different in the fact that the top of the page is south. The map note says " It was here that Mr. Perray and his party camped to enter Lake Huron, where I have seen the passage. I will give it however is said the road is very fine, and it is here that the Missionaries of St. Sulpice will establish themselves."
Maps also show the Rouge River with different names. The Augustus Jones Map of 1793 names it Keitchee Sepee ( Great River ) The John Stegmann Map of Pickering Township 1799 names it River Nen, and shows a lot of detail around the rivers, but no village. First Nations name for Duffin's Creek was Singuatrikdequeonk .....( Pine Wood On Side )Legends or tall tales suggest that a man by the last name of Duffin was killed on the banks of the creek.
