The Rouge Habitat
The Habitat of the Rouge River Valley is varied and supports a
wide variety of mammal, bird, reptile, and plant life. Of the
some 440 species of plants found in the Rouge, 12 National and 93
Local varieties are considered rare. The river is home to Brown
Trout, Rainbow Trout and Salmon. The White Tail Deer; which has
been an icon in saving the Rouge; is found here.

Other species found here, include the Coyote, Fox, Beaver, and
Raccoon. Two rare Birds of Prey, the Red-Shouldered Hawk and
Coopers Hawk may be seen. If you sit on the top of the cliffs at
the Finch Meander, you may get to see the Red Tailed Hawk in
action as they fly through the valley along the cliffs.
Take an evening walk in the Rouge, and you may even catch a
glimpse of a Coyote, Red Fox, or have a close encounter with a
family of Raccoons. We have encountered several of them on our
continuous explorations. On the following pages we will show
photographs of the common and perhaps some of the rare species
found in the Rouge River Valley, Duffins Creek, Petticote Creek and the Oak Ridges Moraine.
I have noticed over the 10 years that we have been doing this project, the sightings are getting fewer as the rush to build houses in these areas continues unabated. Protection for these species is minimal at best. "I rarely see the Red-tailed Hawks anymore, and I used to see them all the time. All Photographs were taken within the Rouge Valley, Duffins Creek, Petticote Creek or the Oak Ridges Moraine, with some exceptions, where we used "Stock Images". We have expanded our coverage to include High Park, The Humber River Bays, Humber Arboretum and the GTA Waterfront Parks; which are wonderful places to explore for City Folk; you can get there by the TTC.
