The Widow Skimmer is a fairly common dragonfly, and is present in most of North America, spring thru summer. This is a female; the mature males have a white waxy layer on their abdomen. They are found on low plants and near the waters edge. The latin luctuosa means "sorrowful" The male leaves the female to lay her eggs alone.
