The side light from the left is just revealing it's maroon color.

The Mourning Cloak is almost always on the move and difficult to photograph. It is usually found in woodland openings and along streams. They feed at sap flows and occasionally visit flowers for nectar. It is actually dark maroon but appears black, with a yellow to cream border and violet-blue spots. In bright light it appears maroon.
