Plants, Trees, Wetlands ... Natures Solution To Pollution
Cost Effective For Canada's Kyoto Commitment
The Common Cattail is found in wetlands, along roads, lakes and is probably one of the most recognized of plants and is found world wide. It is home to the Red-winged Blackbird, provides shelter for fish, and sustenance for Muskrats. Parts of the plant are edible and it's soft down serves as liners for birds nests. First Nations Peoples used the Rhizomes (root) as a vegetable or dried them and ground them into a flour. Young stems were eaten raw or cooked and the immature fruiting spikes were roasted and eaten like corn. Its leaves were woven into mats, and baskets. Today the plant serves as a element in the natural treatment of water.
