Bladder Campion is a member of the Pink Family (Carophyllaceae) and blooms April through
August. The name comes from the balloon like base of the flower
called a globular calyx. As you can see in the photo, the calyx
is inflated, and prominently veined ..... " The leaves when boiled have something of the flavor of the peae ( pea ) and proved of great use to the inhabitants of the island of Minorca in the year 1685, when a swarm of locusts had destroyed the vegetation." .....
