Elecampane is a member of the Sunflower Family and blooms from July to September. Elecampane may be found in fields and along roadsides. The flowers are 2 to 4 inches across and resemble a sunflower. Like many of our wild plants; it is an European import; but this one has a storied history. It made its way to Europe from Asia; while others claim it's source was " The Tears of Helen of Troy " the source of the name Inula helenium. Greek and Roman Historians; Diosondes and Pliny; spoke of its many medicinal properties. It was used during the Middle ages by the Saxons to treat many diseases. Today it's root and rhizomes are used to treat emphysema, and bronchitis. It is found in cough drops and liquors.
