Wild Leek is a member of the Lily Family and first appears in April and flowers June and July. The plant is edible; and is the darling of wild food lovers; along with fiddleheads and fungi morels. It is rich in vitamin C and tastes like a combination of onion and garlic or the cultivated Leek. First Nations ate them and its use can be traced back to the Egyptians. The City of Chicago's name is a derivative of the native Cicaga Wuni or Shikaka meaning Skunk Place; a name First Nations Natives gave large growth patches of Wild Leek because of the pungent oder. If you enjoy wild leeks raw, your friends will shun you for days. It is also called Ramps.
