The Sunflower is familiar to all. The cultivated variety are hybrids of the smaller ones we see in the wild. They are the Common Sunflower and Giant Sunflower ( As In Tall ). The Maximilian and Woodland Sunflower are not found in Ontario. We have all enjoyed eating sunflower seeds in the shell or un-shelled. It is a very versatile plant

and has many uses. The First Nation Peoples ground the seeds into flour for making bread; and pressed the seeds for cooking oil and dressing their hair. Modern uses are Sunflower Seeds for eating, Commercial Sunflower Cooking Oils, Silage and Oil for Soaps. They are also present in our Bird Feeder Mixes.
