The Painted Turtle may be found along the Rouge, on the Oakridges Moraine and in Amos Pond. They may be observed sunning themselves on a log or any dry surface to raise their body temperature which helps

their digestive system. It also helps to dry and hardens their shells. When they hold their heads high they are alert, watching for danger. They grow to a shell size of 4 to 10 inches across. They have yellow and or red stripes on their heads and neck. The live on water lilies, duckweed, earthworms, snails insects, crayfish, tadpoles, frogs, and small fish. They are found from British Columbia to Nova Scotia and points south.
